Key First Aid Tips for Common Medical Emergencies

  • 1. Chest Compressions

Check if the patient is breathing by titling their head and observing for breaths. Call for an ambulance at the earliest. Perform chest compressions by kneeling beside the individual and pushing firmly on the chest
in a steady rhythm, until help arrives

  • 2. Choking

Administer strong back blows between the shoulder blades of the patient or try performing abdominal thrusts to dislodge the obstruction causing choking. If the choking persists, seek urgent medical help as soon as possible.

  • 3. Unconsciousness

Check if the patient is breathing by tilting their head and lifting the chin. Ensure the airway isn’t blocked, causing obstruction in breathing.  If the breathing feels normal, but the patient is still unconscious, call for immediate help. If you notice the person finding it difficult to breathe or is breathing abnormally,  perform chest compressions until help arrives

  • 4. Heavy Bleeding

Remove any piece of clothing or other accessories near the wound to have a better look at its severity and the level of bleeding. Apply pressure on the wound by placing a cloth or your hand on it to manage or reduce the level of bleeding. Call for immediate medical help. In the meanwhile, help the person to lie down and stay calm to avoid chances of fainting.

  • 5. Burns

Cool the burns with water for 10-15 minutes. Do not use ice on the burn. Remove any fitted clothing or accessories around the burn, as it will be difficult to do so after it begins to swell. Cover the wound with sterile material.

  • 6. Broken Bones

Immobilize the broken limb or bone by using a board or a clothing material. Try to avoid any movement and do not attempt to straighten the bone by force. Try to keep the patient calm and still until the ambulance arrives.

  • 7. Heart Attacks

Call for emergency services immediately. Ensure the person is seated or lying down to avoid any physical exertion or other severe complications until help arrives. Monitor the symptoms such as the tightness in the chest, spreading of chest pain, vomiting, etc.

  • 8. Strokes

Look for symptoms like, face drooping, weakness in the arms and unclear speech. If you notice these symptoms, it’s time to act fast and call for emergency help. This test is commonly known as the FAST test and is used when anyone experiences a stroke.

  • 9. Diabetic Emergencies

Provide sugary items in cases of low sugar and for high sugar offer water to ensure they stay hydrated. Call for immediate assistance in case the individual gets unconscious.

  • 10. Asthma

Ensure the person is seated in a comfortable position and takes their prescribed medication or uses their inhaler to feel better. If the person does not get stabilized even after the medications, call for emergency assistance.

  • 11. Poisoning

Identify what led to the poisoning and seek immediate medical help. Do not try to induce vomiting, and avoid offering food or water to the patient. Keep company and monitor the patient until professional help arrives.

People tend to lose bodily control when experiencing seizures. Therefore, clear the place near the person to avoid any physical damage while the seizure occurs.  Ensure their airways are open and call for help if needed.

  • 13. Mental Distress

Actively listen to what the person is saying and offer support in any way possible. Be sensitive toward the distress the person is experiencing and respect their decisions.
